3 Budget-Friendly Drones Compatible with VR Headsets

Drones that work with virtual reality headsets don't have to break your budget. Here are three low-cost drones that are compatible with VR headsets.

Drones and virtual reality (VR) are two of the fastest growing technologies. Drone racers have used VR headsets from some time, so these technologies working together isn’t new, but there’s a misconception that a drone with VR capability comes at a high-cost. We want to debunk that myth. Here are three low-cost drones that are compatible with VR headsets.

MJX X101C Quadcopter

The first drone on our list and the most affordable of them all, the MJX X101C quadcopter is also known as DBPower X101C. It is the upgraded camera version of the X101. Its features and specifications are very average, considering it’s a very low-cost drone. Flight time ranges between 8 to 10 minutes, slightly above the average flight time for a drone within this price range.

Control distance is also surprisingly good considering the price cost of X101C, a good 100 meters of control range. The included camera is only 1MP with some considerable “jello-effect,” but it’s WiFi FPV ready and also is 3D VR headset ready. Both features are available through the free application available for Android and iOS.

PowerUp FPV Drone

Contrary to other drones on this list, PowerUp FPV is a paper drone, not a quadcopter. Yes, you read that correctly, a paper plane. This project comes as an upgrade to the already successful PowerUp 3.0. PowerUp FPV enables you to experience flight as if you were actually sitting in the cockpit of your paper plane drone.

Wearing your smartphone with a head-mounted display (Google cardboard viewer is included with the original package), you can see in real time what your drone is seeing. You can control your paper drone with intuitive movements of your head - PowerUp FPV is very responsive to these movements. Flight time is 10 minutes and control distance is 90 meters. PowerUp FPV has autopilot assisted flight and is compatible with both Android and iOS. Camera is a wide angle VGA. It does have accelerometer and barometer.

Parrot Bebop 2

If your love for drones is not something new, most likely you already came across the Parrot Bebop 2. It’s one of the best quadcopters and one of the most popular drones for both beginners and experts. The Parrot Bebop 2 has some very nice features and specs, including a 25-minute flight time, 300-meter control range (enhanced to 2000 meters when using together with Skycontroller).

The Parrot Bebop 2 also includes a HD FPV 14MP camera with 170 degree fish eye lens - the best image quality from the drones on this list. Parrot Bebop 2 does not have its own controller, instead it uses your smartphone or tablet.

Bebop 2 can be connected to the Skycontroller Black, a flight set which enhances the quadcopter capabilities. Parrot Bebop 2 is compatible with some FPV glasses that use HDMI, including Sony FPV and Zeiss Cinemizer. The VR headsets can be charged via USB directly on the Skycontroller set.
