AI & Robotics for Good Challenge: Meet the 20 Semifinalists
The semifinalists cover a wide range of applications, from devices that can be implanted in the human body, to large robots that can enter disaster zones.
Twenty semifinalists have been announced in the 2016 UAE AI & Robotics for Good Award competition. The international winner will receive a grant worth $1 million (Dh3.67m), while the national winner will receive Dh1 million.
The 20 semifinalists include 9 from the UAE (United Arab Emirates) and 11 from around the world. The semifinalists cover a wide range of applications, from devices that can be implanted in the human body, to large robots that can enter disaster zones.
The award encourages research and the application of innovative solutions in artificial intelligence and robotics to meet existing challenges in the categories of health, education and social services.
Saif Al Aleeli, CEO of the Dubai Museum of the Future Foundation and coordinator general of the UAE AI and Robotics Award for Good, said the 20 semifinalists were narrowed down from 664 submissions from 121 countries.

This competition is following the UAE’s Drones for Good, a contest won by Switzerland’s Flyability. The Flyability team developed Gimball, a drone that can enter confined spaces and safely fly close to humans, proving to be highly effective in rescue missions. It is protected by a rotating cage which makes it capable of colliding with obstacles in challenging environments without losing its stability.
