Meet the Humanoid Robot Reducing Football Concussions

Dartmouth football is using the autonomous Mobile Virtual Player during practice to reduce injuries and simulate realistic game scenarios.

Sports-related concussions are a growing epidemic among athletes. And when undetected or unreported, concussions can result in long-term brain damage and even be fatal.

According to the CDC, 5-10 percent of athletes will experience a concussion in any given sport season. Football, not surprisingly, is the most common sport with concussion risk - a 75% chance.

Quinn Connell, a former engineering student at Dartmouth College, has developed a humanoid robot that he hopes will reduce the number of football-related concussions going forward.

The Mobile Virtual Player (MVP) is an autonomous tackling dummy that replaces the need to have one player take a big hit from another and risk getting hurt just for practice. It’ll also help teach players how to make lower, safer tackles to the mid sections of their opponents.
