Nightmare Machine Uses AI to Create Scary Photos

MIT's Nightmare Machine uses artificial intelligence to turn everyday images into horrifying photos. The Nightmare Machine relies on user feedback to perfect its deep learning algorithms to make each image a little more scary.

MIT isn’t helping the case that we shouldn’t fear artificial intelligence (AI). Just in time for Halloween, MIT has launched its Nightmare Machine that uses AI to turn everyday pictures into horrifying images.

The Nightmare Machine also relies on the public. Users can vote on whether each photo is scary or not scary. The Nightmare Machine takes this user feedback and tweaks its deep learning algorithms to make each image a little more scary.

So what type of images are in the Nightmare Machine? Well, MIT used “state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms to generate new faces” and then “dropped a hint of scariness” onto them.

But the Nightmare Machine doesn’t stop there. It also uses famous landmarks from all across the world, including the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, the White House, and the Colosseum, to name a few.

The Nightmare Machine also zombifies celebrities, including Brad Pitt.



Not that the two presidential candidates need any help being scarier, but MIT’s Nightmare Machine also brings Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump into the fun.
