Pepper, the popular humanoid robot from Softbank, is adding facial recognition technology to its repertoire. SoftBank will use Ever AI’s facial recognition platform in hopes of bringing new levels of personalization to Pepper’s interactions.

Ever AI’s facial recognition platform will enable Pepper to not only welcome customers, but, when connected to a company’s CRM, identify and greet them by name. Pepper already uses emotion-detecting artificial intelligence when interacting with users.

“There’s something incredibly welcoming and powerful about being greeted by name,” stated Steve Carlin, Chief Strategy Officer for SoftBank Robotics. “Ever AI’s platform will bring new levels of sophistication to Pepper’s interactions, to deliver not only vital information to customers, but tailored, personalized, messages that drive businesses’ bottom lines.”

Ever AI has a database of more than 12 billion photos that it has used to train its facial recognition platform. While it’s unclear which of the following will be integrated into Pepper, here are the capabilities of Ever AI’s facial recognition platform:

Pepper Robot Facial Recognition

Face Detection: Find human faces in your photos and videos and return bounding box coordinates
Face Clustering: Group similar faces together, based on thousands of facial data points
Face Verification: Compare two faces and determine the probability they belong to the same person
Face Identification: Compare a single face against a collection of labeled faces and return matches with confidence scores
Emotion Detection: Identify emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, and more
Age Detection: Estimate the age range of the person, based on their image
Gender Detection: Determine whether a person is male or female
Ethnicity Detection: Determine the probability that a face is of a particular ethnicity

Ever AI claims its facial recognition technology has 99.7% accuracy with a 144ms response time, which would be faster and more accurate than similar platforms from Microsoft, IBM Watson, AWS, and Clarifai.
