Video: An Introduction to Controlling Self-Driving Cars

A new video sheds some more light on exactly how self-driving cars can follow their desired trajectories.


Self-driving cars are complicated machines. Google’s driverless cars, for example, have about $150,000 in equipment. The Lidar system mounted on top of the vehicle that takes a detailed 3D map of its surrounding costs as much as $70,000.

All this technology works together to help the self-driving car recognize the difference between a curb, a pedestrian, a bicyclist, a car, a sign, a traffic light, and even road construction. It can also identify road markings. The car can see up to 600 feet.

A new video sheds some more light on exactly how self-driving cars can follow their desired trajectories. Watch the video below for an introduction to controlling self-driving cars, specifically using PID-control.

The video places special emphasis on how the proportional, integral, and derivative gains affect the performance of the vehicle.

The video is pretty informative, and certainly makes me appreciate self-driving cars more. When you think about it, the fact that Google’s self-driving cars have yet to cause an accident, and have only been involved in 14 accidents in more than 2 million miles, is pretty incredible.
