Logistics and supply chain managers in warehouses and distribution centers (DC) are constantly faced with multiple sets of contradictory requirements: reduce the space they use, but increase the volume of goods they distribute; reduce latency while reducing transport and handling costs; and, most conspicuously, cut labor costs but maintain or increase service levels. Unlike corporate functions such as manufacturing, distribution and warehousing cannot be entirely outsourced to countries with low labor costs. What to do?  During the past two decades corporate logistics and supply chain groups have adopted a wide range of automation technologies and support technology with great effectiveness.  However, there is still much room for improvement.  One solution that has proven a success in the past is undergoing rapid change. This solution – Automated Guide Vehicles or AGVs – are becoming smarter and autonomous, and thereby much more functional.  AGVs have now been joined by intelligent, and often mobile, robotics systems.  Both classes of solutions increase system flexibility and extend the warehouse/DC automation chain.
