Overland Park, KS (April 27, 2005)—2004 was a good year to launch trade and consumer shows, as exemplified by the just-announced winners of EXPO’s 2005 Best New Show Awards.

Winners range from Digital Life 2004, best in the Consumer Show category for its consumer technology and entertainment event that attracted 25,000 attendees, to the International Tile and Stone Show New York, best in the Trade Show category for its regional spin-off that drew 325 exhibitors covering 104,750 net square feet.

“This year’s winners prove that trade and consumer shows continue to be the best medium to bring together buyers and sellers face to face, across all industries,” says Danica Tormohlen, Editor in Chief of EXPO. “Show organizers are producing successful show launches in emerging industries, as well as with regional and spin-off events.”

Based on all entries, a few key trends emerged for show launches in 2004:

- Fall is most popular time of year to launch new events.
- New York is a popular location for launches.
- Three of five winners held their events at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
- Independent, for-profit producers were much more active in launching shows than associations.
- Spin-offs are hot. Two of five winners were spin-offs from other successful events (one regional, one international), and the Co-located Show Launch winner, the All Asia Food Expo, will be spun off into Los Angeles in 2005.

The Best New Show Award, presented by EXPO Magazine, salutes trade and consumer shows in five categories, including: Trade Show, Consumer Show, International Show, Co-located Show Launch, and Trade and Consumer Show combination. The program is the only industry honor solely recognizing new show launches. Winners were selected based on net square footage, number of exhibiting companies and attendance (excluding exhibitors). Each of these three attributes was weighted to determine winners for each category.
