Robotic Work Zone Flagger Prevents Accidents
This robot increases safety and also reduces labor costs.

Synergy Technology has launched the Automated Flagger AF-100 robotic work zone flagger, which is a trailer-mounted signal light with a gate arm that raises and lowers to direct traffic around a single lane work zone. Deployment of two radio-controlled signal trailers allow road crews to provide high-visibility traffic signals and remove human flaggers from the roadway, which increases highway work zone safety and reduces labor costs. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) there were 40,000 accidents and 845 fatalities in highway work zones in 2007. Traditional human flaggers are often the victim and/or the cause of these accidents. Featuring an electronic conflict monitor, the AF-100 system reduces the human error that in the past has been the cause of crashes.

The Automated Flagger AF-100 is a red/yellow lens device that meets the 2009 Federal Highway Administration MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) Section 6E.04 specification. The device can be used in either single or two trailer operation. The AF-100 Signal Trailer features three 12V 115 amp-hour batteries with an SP-80 solar panel and charge controller for the 110VAC 10-amp battery charger with a mains connector that is accessible from the outside of the battery cabinet. The 30cm (12in) red and yellow ITE standard compliant Light Emitting Diodes (LED) signal lamps are augmented by a 12.7cm (5in) amber LED that is mounted on the back side of the signal housing and indicates the status of the amber signal light to an operator within the work zone. The counter-balanced Gate Arm measures 2.4m (8ft) in length, plus a 60cm (2ft) flag extension, and 14cm (5.5in). The wireless remote-control units are high-performance, frequency-hopping spread spectrum transceivers operating under FCC part 15.247 regulations for the 900MHz band.
