Robotic Technology in Rehabilitation Project

The Shadow Robot Company, London, UK, has started a project to develop advanced robotic technologies for rehabilitation for The Mays and Schnapp Pain Clinic and Rehabilitation Center, Memphis, USA.

Dr Moacir Schnapp, Clinic Director, cantacted The Shadow Robot Company to ask them to develop and construct a prototype device which will provide rehabilitative services for patients recovering from surgery, an illness or injury.

Mays and Schnapp Pain Clinic and Rehabilitation Center was the first pain clinic in North America and the only clinic in the Mid-South accredited in all areas of adult outpatient rehabilitation.

“Little attention is generally paid to the specific rehabilitation needs of patients who suffer from chronic pain and coexisting neurological disorders. After a long search, we chose Shadow Robot Company to help us create and market devices that can fill this gap. We were impressed by their flagship, a very advanced and sophisticated robotic arm, and by the bright and energetic team of engineers we met. Their creative team has already come up with several ingenious ideas to solve our problems and we are now working on our first prototype. The results so far confirm what I’ve learned a long time ago: I don’t have to be smart, I just have to work around smart people,” says Dr Moacir Schnapp.

And Rich Walker, Technical Director at The Shadow Robot Company, adds: “Shadow seeks to bring robotic technology to the benefit of humans. Bringing our “soft” approach to pain management fits this very well. We look forward to the results of this project!”
