No Hands Across America

If you're old enough to do so, cast your mind back to 1995. The Internet was a fad, smartphones with video recording were but a distant dream, and Justin Bieber hadn't been invented yet.

In the midst of all that primitive confusion, a two-man team from Carnegie Mellon University served as passengers on an epic self-driving car journey from Pittsburgh, PA to San Diego, CA.

Dubbed "No Hands Across America," the trip was a great success. The kicker? The vehicle and software were built in around 16 weeks and for under $20,000.
