Fighting Fires

Recently there's been a lot of bad publicity around drones interfering with firefighters battling wildfires in California. Some of the firefighters use aircraft to combat the fires, but more unauthorized drones are flying over active wildfires, forcing the firefighters to land the aircraft and delay their efforts of containing the fires.

But, drones are also being used to fight fires. Researchers at UC Berkeley are testing drones to help early location and identification of fires. Called the Fire Urgency Estimator in Geosynchronous Orbit (Fuego), the researchers believe the system will be able to spot new wildfires anywhere in the Western US barely three minutes after they start.
