Currently more than 300 PackBot robots are deployed worldwide and are primarily used to identify and dispose of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). PackBot robots have performed tens of thousands of missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and are credited with saving scores of soldiers’ lives.
“Advanced robot technology, like the PackBot, has many important applications—from space exploration and assisting soldiers on the battlefield to cleaning homes,” said Vice Admiral Joe Dyer (U.S. Navy, Ret.), executive vice president and general manager, iRobot. “PackBot’s induction into the Space Technology Hall of Fame is a testament to iRobot’s ability to build upon its proven technological achievements to create more advanced robots.”
Since 1988, the Space Technology Hall of Fame has honored 52 technologies and the innovators who transformed space technology into commercial products that improve life here on Earth. The Space Foundation, in cooperation with NASA, established the Space Technology Hall of Fame to increase public awareness of the benefits that result from space exploration programs and to encourage further innovation. A complete list of all Space Technology Hall of Fame inducted technologies and innovating organizations and individuals can be found online at http://www.SpaceTechHallofFame.org.
