Design, Print Your Own Robot
04/10/12 — MIT is leading an ambitious new project to reinvent how robots are designed and produced. Funded by a $10 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the project will aim to develop a desktop technology that would make it possible for the average person to design, customize and print a specialized robot in a matter of hours. “This research envisions a whole new way of thinking about the design and manufacturing of robots, and could have a profound impact on society,” says MIT Professor Daniela Rus, leader of the project and a principal investigator at the MIT Computer Science…

INTRA Groupe Selects Wind River for Radioactive Cleanup Robots
04/21/10 — INTRA Groupe’s new family of rugged, real-time remote controlled radioactive cleanup robots to standardize on Wind River’s VxWorks, the world’s leading commercial real-time operating system. Wind River announced that the France-based Group of Robotic Intervention on Accidents (INTRA) has selected VxWorks for its new family of radioactive cleanup robots, called the ERASE, ERELT and EBENNE trucks. INTRA Groupe is part of a consortium comprised of Electricité de France (EDF), Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique (CEA) and AREVA. The robots are equipped with cameras and radioactivity sensors, and are designed to assess and clear radioactive accidents. The External Reconnaissance, Assistance and Surveillance…

Laser-Ranging System Provides Precision to the Nanometer
05/26/09 — The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has announced the development of an ultra-precise laser-ranging system that combines two different approaches to range-finding and an “optical frequency comb”—a set of spectrometry tools that can precisely identify the color of light from specific sources. The system combines time-of-flight method of…
