Pirates Beware: Navy’s Robot Copter on the Hunt
04/18/12 — ARLINGTON, Va.— Navy unmanned aircraft will be able to distinguish small pirate boats from other vessels when an Office of Naval Research (ONR)-funded sensor starts airborne tests this summer, officials said April 5. Called the Multi-Mode Sensor Seeker (MMSS), the sensor is a mix of high-definition cameras, mid-wave infrared sensors and laser-radar (LADAR) technology. It will be placed on a robotic helicopter called Fire Scout. Carrying advanced automatic target recognition software, the sensor prototype will allow Fire Scout to autonomously identify small boats on the water, reducing the workload of Sailors operating it from control stations aboard Navy ships. “Sailors…

Robosquirrel vs. Rattlesnakes
04/13/12 — Los Angeles, CA—The Los Angeles Times reports that scientists from the University of California, Davis, and San Diego State University have released a video of a rattlesnake attacking a robotic squirrel. The video was made by Rulon Clark, a biology professor at San Diego State who is trying to determine how squirrels and rattlesnakes communicate in the wild. The rattlers don’t attack adult squirrels, which are immune to their venom. But in the spring and summer months, they love to dine on infant squirrels. Hence the need for squirrel vigilance. When a squirrel thinks a hungry rattlesnake is nearby, it…
